Key features

Cap hygrophanous: cinnamon brown when wet, with a paler, fading center (a two-toned effect), smooth. Grows in clusters on deciduous wood; stem below the membranous ring dark brown and scaly (the key feature versus the deadly Galerina marginata).

The Sheathed Woodtuft has a stem covered below the ring with projecting, dark small scales. The Funeral Bell (deadly poisonous, contains amatoxins) has a similar size and color, but its stem below the ring is smooth, with only silvery fibrils. Inexperienced foragers should not pick K. mutabilis.

Sulphur TuftHypholoma fasciculare

The Sheathed Woodtuft has a two-toned cap (pale center, dark margin; hygrophanous) and a ring plus a dark scaly stem; the Sulphur Tuft has a uniform yellow-green cap, no ring, and is extremely bitter.
