Key features

Fruit body tongue-shaped or semicircular, fleshy, blood red to liver red, with a spongy surface. Spore-bearing surface of small, separate tubes, yellowish to pinkish; flesh blood red when cut, with reddish juice, sourish. Grows on trunks of old oaks (less often chestnuts).
