Species description

The most dangerous toxic mushroom in Poland, responsible for the majority of fatal poisonings. Amatoxins destroy the liver; death within 5-7 days without transplantation. Faint sickly-sweet odor in older specimens. Any suspicion = DO NOT collect.

The death cap (A. phalloides) has a VOLVA at the base of the stipe and a pendant ring. The parasol has a scaly cap, a snakeskin pattern on the stipe and a ring that slides along it. Both have pale gills, so gill colour settles nothing. Always check the base of the stipe.
