A mistake can kill

In the forest together for about 12 wk a year, including now.Both grow on dead wood, including conifer wood, and both form clusters, so the way they grow does not tell them apart. The Smoky-gilled Hypholoma has grayish to purple-brown gills, a purple-brown spore print and a stem without a membranous ring. The Funeral Bell has rusty brown gills and a spore print of the same color, a narrow ring and silvery fibrils below it. The Funeral Bell contains amatoxins, so small brown mushrooms from wood are not picked without checking the ring and the spore print color.

Mushrooms month by month

The calendar shows when the species from our atlas grow in Polish forests: when they start, when they peak and when they end. Curves come from foragers’ observations, and every species comes with a warning about poisonous look-alikes that grow at the same time.

Curves come from observations in Poland on iNaturalist and GBIF since 2014, and for rarer species also from Czechia, Slovakia and Germany. They show when foragers most often come across a species, not how much of it grows. Season limits come from the atlas. Year-round species such as bracket fungi are left out of the wheel.
